Chantry Chinook Classic underway with $50K in prizes available

A 20.80-pound chinook salmon led the Lake Huron Fishing Club’s Chantry Chinook Classic Salmon Derby as of the afternoon of July 26.

Bob Clark caught the leading salmon and weighed in at Lures N Lines in Wiarton.

Brad Schwass sat atop the trout leaderboard three days before with an 18.75-pound lake trout weighed in at the Port Elgin Harbour on July 23.

The 2023 Chantry Chinook Classic started on July 22 and runs until Aug. 6 when scales close at 2 p.m.

Weigh stations for the derby are located at the Kincardine Harbour, Saugeen Shores Port Elgin Harbour, Lures N Lines in Wiarton and Lion’s Head Harbour.

There are more than $50,000 in prizes available for the annual derby this year. The top salmon will net the angler $15,000, with second place $4,000 and third place $2,000.

For trout, the biggest first earns the angler $7,500 with second place netting $1,500 and third place $750.

The largest rainbow trout will win $500 and the largest brown trout will win $500.

There are also daily hidden weight prizes and daily largest salmon prizes available.

Kids Day is July 29 with no ticket needed for youth anglers. Seniors Day will run on July 26 and August 2.

All proceeds from derby ticket sales go to the conservation efforts of the Lake Huron Fishing Club. Tickets are available for purchase at eight area retailers with a single ticket selling for $35 and a group ticket (two adults and up to six juniors) for $80.
